Before you dismiss this as a pious dodge — as the kind of thing people say when they don't want to do anything hard — hear me out. I'm not saying prayer instead of action. I'm saying prayer is the most radical action available to us.
Why Prayer Is Political
Politics, at its root, is about power — who has it, how it's used, and what it's for. Prayer is a direct challenge to every human claim to ultimate power.
When you pray, you are asserting that there is a King above every king. You are appealing to a jurisdiction higher than any court, any congress, any president. You are declaring, in the most concrete way possible, that the final word on human affairs does not belong to Washington or Brussels or Beijing.
That is a profoundly political act. Emperors have always known it. That's why they've always tried to control it.
The Early Church Understood This
The Roman Empire didn't persecute Christians primarily because of their theology. It persecuted them because of their politics.
When Christians refused to offer incense to Caesar, they weren't making a religious statement in the modern, privatized sense. They were making a claim about sovereignty. They were saying: there is one Lord, and it isn't you.
And when they gathered to pray — to call on the name of Jesus, to ask for His kingdom to come — they were doing something the empire rightly recognized as subversive. They were organizing around a different power.

What Happens When the Church Prays
History is full of moments when prayer changed the political landscape in ways that no campaign or protest could have.
The Reformation was preceded by decades of prayer. The abolition movement was soaked in it. The civil rights movement was born in Black churches where people prayed before they marched.
This isn't coincidence. Prayer aligns human action with divine purpose. It changes the people who pray — and through them, it changes the world they inhabit.
The Cop-Out Version and the Real Thing
I want to be honest about the cop-out version, because it's real and it's common.
The cop-out version says: I'll pray about it — and then does nothing else. It uses prayer as an excuse for passivity, a way to feel spiritual without doing anything costly.
The real thing looks different. It prays and then acts. It asks God for wisdom and then shows up to the school board meeting. It intercedes for leaders and then votes. It seeks God's kingdom and then works to build it in the neighborhood where it lives.
Prayer without action is incomplete. But action without prayer is just politics.

Pray for your leaders. Not just the ones you voted for. All of them. Pray that God would give them wisdom they don't have on their own. Pray that He would restrain what needs to be restrained and advance what needs to advance.
Pray for your neighbors. Pray for your city. Pray for revival — not as a religious buzzword, but as a genuine transformation of hearts and communities.
And then get up and go do something. The prayer will tell you what.
